Start making your list for Santa by heading over to Fifth Avenue to stroll the famed holiday windows of such department stores as Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor (a fine place to start your perambulations), Bloomingdale’s, and Bergdorf Goodman. Offset the commercialism of this stroll by soaking up some nature and espying some foliage in nearby Central Park.

The smallish rink is capped at just 150 skaters at a time, so you and yours will have plenty of elbow room once you get on the ice. It’s classic, not cliched, to watch the Macy’s Parade on Thanksgiving, so why not do it in person? Yes, it’s crowded, and, yes, it might be cold, but nothing beats the thrill of seeing the pageantry close up. In addition, or even instead of, you can take your youngsters to watch the balloons being inflated on Wednesday, from 3 to 10 p.m., on the Upper West Side. Either way, your little friend won’t soon forget seeing a ginormous Big Bird floating through the air.

The full name of this event is actually NYC Pilgrim Pedal Thanksgiving Day Morning Bike Ride — for Pancakes, which gives you some insight into what you’re in for. The ride (10 to 12 miles one way, or 20 to 24 miles round trip) leisurely winds its way through Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. There’s also a stop at a diner for breakfast and conversation midway through. Kids are welcome as passengers (properly helmeted, of course), or as riders (ages 1 and up).
